Makeup Haul Reviews
January 6, 2011
I thought I’d come back and review the products that I bought last weekend :-).
1. Purity Made Simple cleanser – so glad to be using this again – absolutely love it and my face feels really clean again.
2. Maybelline Fit me Foundation 120 – This is really a shade too dark and I’m going to get the 115 to try it out. My friend Lisa suggested mixing the two together and that’s also a great possibility – thanks Lisa! Otherwise it looks great and wears fairly well – it has a dewy look which is great for my skin that is getting drier each year. The only thing I don’t like about it is the fragrance – wish they could leave that out.
3. Maybelline Fit Me Powder 120 – I like this powder! It is not cakey looking at all and the color I think will even work with the lighter shade of foundation as it’s almost translucent. It’s been a long time since I’ve worn powder and this one is good!
4. Maybelline Fit Me Concealer 10 – I’m thinking this will go back – it seems really drying for my skin and I probably need something a little creamier. Yesterday I just put the foundation on under my eyes and it worked fine.
5. Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Light Pink – This is also a keeper – nice light shade of pink that looks very natural.
6. Cover Girl Professional Mascara in Brown – Also keeping, but I’ve used it for years and love it anyway. BTW – This is the one with the brush that is NOT curved in case someone wanted to try it out.
7. Maybelline Eye Shadow Quad in Chic Naturals – Love this too!! The colors are nice and neutra just the way I like them. I did notice that this set is called Mocha Motion – no wonder I like it. Coffee.
8. Essie Nail Color in Mademoiselle – This is so light and natural looking on my nails and it wears very well too! Last night I put another coat on and it only really needed it at the tips. I’m hoping it might help my nails look better over time as well. The winter does a number on my hands every year. Bleh.
So, those are my reviews…I’m enjoying using everything and it’s making me feel a little happier about starting my days too. It’s fun to be a girl!

Makeup Haul!!
January 2, 2011
Yes, I got to buy all new makeup today! I was actually out of everything, so this was a rare experience indeed! It all started when I learned of Maybelline’s new Fit Me line, so I decided to check it out. It looked good, was inexpensive, and Wal-Mart had some of it in so I went for it. Here’s what I bought:
1. Purity Made Simple cleanser by Philosophy: This is THE best cleanser ever because it does what it says it does – takes off every trace of makeup.
2. Maybelline Fit Me Foundation in 120: The color may actually be too dark, but we’ll see. I can always exchange it or wait until it’s gone and replace with 115. I realized that I don’t need the lightest shade possible because it just washes me out. I’m re-learning how to find the right shade.
3. Maybelline Fit Me Powder: I don’t usually buy powder, but it could be nice to have. Also in shade 120 – the colors all coordinate.
4. Maybelline Fit Me Concealer 10: I usually don’t buy concealer either, but it’s time. It may help cover the rosacea and my under eye circles as well.
5. Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Light Pink: This is a nice light pink that I think will do nicely. They also have a Light Nude that I’d like to see if it would be good maybe for summertime. Unfortunately Wal-Mart did not have this color in so will have to wait to see what the color looks like.
6. Cover Girl Professional Mascara in Brown: This is the best drugstore mascara ever in my book. Not cakey or gloppy, just straight up darkening and maybe a little lengthening.
7. Maybelline Eye Shadow Quad in Chic Naturals: This is totally new – it has an eye shadow base, 2 shadows, and a liner – really cool! The colors are very natural and you can use it in a myriad of ways. It even has a diagram on the back of the package.
8. Essie Nail Color in Mademoiselle: Wal-Mart had a huge display of Essie products and I couldn’t resist! It has been forever since I wore nail polish and the pretty natural pink just drew me in what can I say? I think the little girls will like it too :-).
The one thing I forgot was an eyebrow pencil – will have to go back for that. I haven’t bought any eyebrow anything in a while so it may take some time to get the right product. I’ll keep you posted.
So there you have it – my makeup haul. Being a girl is SO much fun!!

Happy New Year!
January 1, 2011
Well, I’m feeling pretty good today – although it could just be my hormone high before my hormone low :-). I am thinking of my goals for this year – I don’t do resolutions – and I thought I’d share them with you. I also bought a new planner that’s different than just a datebook for recording what you have to do, but I’ll talk more about that tomorrow. I plan on spending some time with it at Starbucks to get started. Anywho, on with my goals!
1. Lose 60 lbs by the end of the year. Yes, I really do have that much to lose and I’ve already lost 13 pounds since summer of 2010 so I’m on my way and don’t want to lose the momentum. At the same time, I want to get into healthier habits and that will take time.
2. Have a garage sale spring 2011. I have a lot of homeschool books and things I want to sell as well as other stuff cluttering up the house.
3. See my vocation of wife and mother as my job (because it really is) and make goals for it accordingly.
4. Really put God first and this is hard because I’m not really sure how to do that. I want to learn how to listen to Him and learn how my life can be with Him at the forefront of every day. My favorite “story” in the Gospels is that of Mary and Martha and when Jesus says, to Martha, “You are worried about many things, but only one thing is necessary” and I keep thinking, “What IS the one thing?”. Maybe it is this – to know, love, and serve God? I love St. Martha and totally identify with her and pray for her help often – maybe I should ask her help on this because she obviously started doing that one thing in order that she could say, “I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God who has come into the world”.
That’s what I’ve thought of to start with and I think it’s a good list. I’m sure it will be refined as the year goes on.
So, Happy New Year to all of you and may 2011 be a Year of Grace from Our Lord for ALL of us!

As I approach the new year…
December 30, 2010
…I am looking back on this one. I found some great printables that have reflections for the past year. Questions like, “How did you grow spiritually” and “What challenges did you have and how did you deal with them” are asked. This is a great year for me to do this as I have grown a lot in so many ways! It has been a rough year, but there have also been many ah-ha moments (as Oprah calls them) to make me think and move forward. So, over this weekend I’ll take some time to be quiet and reflect in my heart on the many things that have happened this year and make some real goals for myself to work on in the coming year. I encourage you too, dear readers, to reflect on your life and not just make resolutions, but move towards real lasting change.

thirtysomething – Episode 11
December 12, 2010
Today I’m going to talk about Episode 11 – Therapy. This is one of my all time favorite episodes, and I think a lot of therapists back in the day liked it too. In fact, I believe they used many episodes in their practices to help others gain insights into their relationships. Watching it again now that I’m older, I can see why. It has opened up more for me as well. Do listen to the commentary on this episode – Patricia Wettig, Ken Olin, and Timothy Busfield do the honors and it’s very interesting and entertaining.
Episode 11 – Therapy – In the commentary, Patricia Wettig says that this episode is all about secrets and it is. It is the secret of Nancy and Elliot’s marriage being in the toilet and going to therapy for help in a last ditch effort to save the marriage, and the secret of Ellyn’s tatoo on her butt. It’s also about how we keep those secrets and wonder in the end if they are worth the keeping.
My favorite line in the whole show is this:
Nancy: I don’t work, I stay at home with the kids.
Therapist: It’s work.
Nancy: Yeah, well, but you know what I mean.
Right out of the gate Nancy is saying that what she does isn’t as important as her husband’s work because she doesn’t get a paycheck. The therapist (and whoever wrote this episode) is absolutely correct – it IS work. Being a wife and a mother IS work even if we don’t punch a timeclock (which we’d never get around to clocking out on ’till the kids were 18 anyway. Maybe.).
Elliot is trying to make light of the whole situation saying that Nancy thinks things are bad and he doesn’t, blah, blah, blah. Too bad he can’t be really honest about how he feels and get honest about his responsibilities in the marriage. He has to take the long way to figure it out and almost loses Nancy in the process.
Personally, I think Nancy was right – Elliot did want to be a little boy and have all the fun stuff for himself and have sex just as sex for fun instead of it being the intimate thing that it is. He loved his children, but wasn’t really tuned in. He might have loved Nancy, but he loved himself more. Nancy was all caught up in being a mom and losing herself in the process, as happens to a lot of us, and now she is at a stage in her life where’s she’s trying to figure out who she is and what she wants and how she fits into all of that. I’ve been there too and I’m still figuring things out.
Later on, Nancy tries to do what Elliot wants her to do – look sexy, ask about his day – but he’s not biting. Later on, in the bedroom, he asks why she never shaves her legs anymore – talk about a mood killer!! She shakes her head and gets up and leaves the room and he’s wondering what he did – yeah, as if! It will take awhile for Elliot to realize that being single isn’t what it’s cracked up to be anymore and that he really does love Nancy and embrace all that marriage is.
On the subject of Ellyn’s tatoo, Michael doesn’t think anything of telling Gary and Eliott about it and telling them not to say anything. As the gossip makes the rounds it comes back to Ellyn at a party at which time she blows up at Michael for spilling the beans in the first place. It is so hard to know what to tell people and when and what not to say and when to hold back. In Ellyn’s case though, she knew everyone and the secret never left the safety of their circle, so in that respect it worked out okay. I’m certainly not condoning Michael telling his buddies, but at least he didn’t tell just anyone. In the end, Ellyn tells her boyfriend who thinks it’s cool and she realizes that it’s all okay and nothing to worry about.
That’s my take on this episode. I think I’ve missed talking about a couple of others, and I’ll go back and see which ones. It may mean re-watching those episodes, but who cares? It’s thirtysomething!!

Hi – I’m still here!
December 11, 2010
Apologies to those of you reading my little blog for kind of disappearing for the last couple of weeks or so. I’ve been having a difficult time lately and could not find the time (or the heart) to write. My mom had back surgery a couple of weeks ago and have been helping her get back on her feet. Also, I am grieving the lost of a special person in my life. So, it has been busy and I’ve been dealing with a lot of emotions as well. I am back now and have a lot to catch up on and will start with thirtysomething soooo – on with the show!

Picking out a Christmas Tree
November 26, 2010
It is our tradition to go to a local tree farm the day after Thanksgiving to pick out a Chcristmas tree. We don’t cut it down yet – just pick it out and pay for it. Then, around the third week of Advent, we’ll go back and cut it down to bring home and decorate.
Today, I had Mike take ALL the kids down while I stayed at home to enjoy the quiet :-). The girls had a lot of fun on the hayride and running around the trees in general. As usual, we took lots of pictures so here’s one of the kids and our tree for 2010.

Oh Crap Moment – Day After Thanksgiving
I awakened when I thought I’d heard something like a kid crying, but wasn’t sure. Then, when I had decided to get out of bed to check I heard Matt say, “Oh Crap!”
At first I thought he’d forgotten to take Chris in to work (he had to be there at 3am), but then when I looked in the bathroom from my bedroom door I realized that someone had puked – all over the floor. It was Katie, “I’m not feeling very good”, she said. Poor kid – too much Thanksgiving food.
Matt offered to clean it, but I decided to do it myself – I had him take care of Katie and make sure she changed her clothes. So, there I was at 4am on my hands and knees in the kids’ bathroom cleaning the floor. Ah well that’s life. And I’m sure it won’t be the last time to do that either.
BTW Matt – thanks again for helping this morning – both taking Chris to work and helping with Katie and offering to clean the mess. You will make a fine dad someday – you’ve certainly had enough practice at these kinds of things!
