thirtysomething – an anniversary
September 29, 2010
It was 23 years ago today on Tuesday, September 29, 1987, that thirtysomething debuted. It was the pilot episode and I remember there was a lot of buzz surrounding this show. I had seen the ads for it, and knew I really wanted to watch it. So I did. Every Tuesday without fail. Okay, down at the end of the fourth season I think I missed one or two, but that’s because I had a baby (Chris) that April.
After the series ended, I watched the re-runs on Lifetime until they suddenly pulled the show for whatever reasons. Talk about being angry! So, I waited and waited for it to be re-run again and it never was. So, I waited and waited for it to be released on VHS video and it never was. I waited for it to be released on dvd and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t out when it should have been because it had been such a well loved show. Twenty-two years went by and finally last year I found out that the first season was going to be released on August 25 and I rejoiced. I rented it on Netflix and savored every moment of each episode. I remembered how I felt when I first started watching the show and compared it to how I felt now since I am grown up compared to being only 24 years old when it first aired. The characters I identified with back then, I still liked them. The characters I didn’t like back then, I still didn’t like them. Waiting between season releases was like waiting for the start of each new season when it was on then – excruciating!
Well, I knew from the start I would have to buy the dvd’s. I buy very few movies/tv shows because I have to really, really love them to own them. This is one of those shows. Not having a lot of money, I also knew I’d have to wait a little bit to gather funds. As luck would have it, Matt bought me Season One for my birthday and with the gift card Jeff gave me, I bought Season 2 when it was released. Then, I bought Season 3 with the Christmas gift card my mom had given me. Now, all I had to do was wait for Season 4 which wouldn’t come out until September 7. I started saving up, but then I missed my opportunity! I did not pre-order because I was hoping for a lower price than $44 so I waited and then when I decided to go ahead and buy it, the price had jumped 10 bucks!! So, I waited again and luck was with me again – the price went down to $39.99 and I jumped on it. Now I own ALL four seasons and I couldn’t be happier!!
I have now finished watching all of the episodes on Season 4 and am returning to the beginning tonight to watch them all again. I am starting with the pilot since today is the anniversary of its airing, and then each Friday I will watch two episodes (or an episode with it’s coordinating commentary) until I have gone through all four seasons again. I am also going to come here and comment on each episode – my thoughts, likes, dislikes, etc. Feel free to leave comments about what you think too!
So journey back in time with me to the Steadman home and re-live all those great moments that made us laugh, cry, get angry, or just made us think. See you on Friday!

Music Monday
September 27, 2010
Last weekend, I was watching thirtysomething when Matt came home from being out with a friend. I hadn’t talked with him all day, and not much the day before, so it was nice to sit and chat for awhile. And chat awhile we did! It was soon time for Mike to get Jeff from work, so Chris and Steve came down to wait with Matt and I, and we ended up not just talking, but playing Name That Tune with Matt’s itunes list! It was SO much fun! When Jeff came home, he joined in. We had a blast and spent well over an hour listening and calling out names of singers, songs, and sometimes albums. We all love music so much in this house and we also love showing off our knowledge of our favorites. It was time well spent.

First Day of Fall!
September 23, 2010
The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to change colors, and the air is (finally) getting cooler and that can mean only one thing – FALL IS HERE! And it’s officially here today – yay!! To celebrate we are making pumpkin pies – no law that says you can only eat them on Thanksgiving Day right? Enjoy the beauty of today – the first day of fall!

Taking care of myself
I’ve spent the last few days recuperating from my fall on Saturday. I’ve also spent time brooding and crying – things I haven’t really done in a few months. However, I also spent the last day and a half cleaning, organizing, resting, and playing. I feel much better with the house being tidy, good meals being eaten, and a better outlook for the week. I realized I had to take time to take care of me. And I did.

My Deluxe Oh Crap Moment
September 19, 2010
Yesterday I was at Starbucks with my Treat Receipt to get a cheap iced coffee before I picked Chris up from work. I got out of the car and walked up to the store front and then I tripped. It was all in slow motion – the falling, my knee hitting the pavement, trying to put my hands out to stop the fall (and failing), and knowing that my head was about to hit the door and managing to only hit it slightly. Then I just sort of curled up for a couple moments trying to take in what happened. I looked up and saw no one at the counter so, being the shy person I am, was thankful at first that no one saw. Then I was mad because it was a crappy ending to a crappy emotional day. So I walked to the car, without going in (too embarrassed), but you know? It would have been nice if just one person who was in that store and if they had seen what happened to come out and asked if I was okay. But, as my luck would have it, that didn’t happen. So, when I got home I grumped to Starbucks. Mostly ’cause I just needed to. It’s not their fault, and I won’t sue, but it just would have been nice to have someone give a damn. You know?
My legs and knee are sore, my right knee is scraped up, and I’m feeling raw today. So, I’m going to spend the day brooding because I want to. Then, tonight, I’ll clean up a little, and watch thirtysomething. Tomorrow I’ll pick myself up and start again. It’s what I do. What I have to do.

thirtysomething collection
Season 4 arrived today!! I now own ALL FOUR seasons!! I have waited 20 years to see these shows again, and waited for them to come out on home vide. This is my all time favorite tv series and it is SO good to be able to have them all and be able to watch anytime I want – squeeee!!!!!
Tonight I am celebrating by watching a couple of the season 4 episodes I wasn’t able to watch via Netflix Instant Watch. I watched all the others they have for season 4, so now I go back and start filling in the gaps. I have to say, I don’t remember a lot of season 4 except for Gary’s death and Nancy’s cancer journey. It was probably because I was pregnant with Chris at the time – he was born in April of 1991 and the show ended in May 1991.
After I watch all of season 4, I am going to go back and watch them all from the beginning – 2 episodes a week. It will be my new Friday ritual replacing my long standing What Not To Wear ritual starting in 2002. We don’t get TLC anymore so I haven’t watched WNTW in over a year :-(. It is my second all time favorite tv show – but that’s another post.
Thirtysomething – it was so good while it lasted!

Your Chuckle For Today
September 16, 2010
Funny #1: Katie is a very creative little girl – she likes to design fashions for her dolls out of paper towels and tissues of all things. One day she said maybe she’d have a store with clothing she designed in it.
ME: Great I can come visit you and see your clothing!
KATIE: Mom, you’ll be dead by then!WHAT??!!
Funny #2: This morning, Becky and I were doing her reading and the question was, “What is filled with air and can pop?” Here’s what Becky said, “Pop-Tarts”. WHA???? Obviously, she’s never heard of balloons :-).

She can read!!
September 14, 2010
I just have to brag a little – Becky is now reading!! Today, she was able to sound the letters out and blend them into words. Later, I caught her on the next page of her book sounding words out in the little sentences. YAY!! I am so proud of her and I have to say I’m proud of me too – it was worth it to wait and work another year until she was ready.
Last year, when Katie started reading, Becky still wasn’t ready – it wasn’t making sense to her yet. So, I shelved the reader and just worked with her on letter recognition and letter sounds. Earlier this year, I cracked out the Sing, Read, and Write program from Brite Music and she really got into that. She would be singing the songs all the time which was great because she was learning as she was singing. Then, a few weeks ago, I found a book at the library about a little mouse in first grade who did not like to read. He didn’t like to read because the letters didn’t make sense to him. Well, she loved that book and I think it encouraged her as well. One day, she looked at the word “silly” and said, “If you put an “a” where the “i” is it would be Sally!”. Oh yes, she was ready!! So, when we started school a couple of weeks ago, she also started Reader A and today it all came together and clicked!! She’s on her way now, and I suspect she will be reading everything in sight – just like the others. I feel good about my teaching efforts, but the real work was hers.
