  • Welcome 2025 – Life Update

    January 13, 2025

Well, yeah, that’s exactly how these young whippersnappers would title this post. But I’m not young nor do I get into a lot of social media (obviously) but I do need to write once in awhile if not to just update my own self on what has been going on.

The year that was 2024 did not pan out the way I had hoped, but maybe that is for the best so I can get my plans together? I don’t know. It was a bit of a blow but then there were birthdays and holidays to keep me busy so I guess it ended up okay. Just okay. Now it is wintry and cold and snowy and I’m doing my best to stay in the game. So let’s see how things stand.

Homemaking – Still doing my routines a la Flylady. Not sure if I’ve said this before but I only use it for a framework now. Several years ago I made the system mine by plugging in what needs to be done in MY home instead of doing it exactly as they want you to. And that’s the way these systems should work once you get the pattern down. Toss out what does not work for you (the Weekly Home Blessing) and keep what does (weekly plan). Things aren’t completely out of control around here, but my motivation is sorely lacking and I need to regain control by making some things non negotiable so they get done and I’m not just flying by the seat of my pants. Housework bores me to tears and after doing it for the last 40 years I’m kind of done. But it also has to get done so you’re not living in a pig pen (I’m done with that era) so I need to find a way to get to a point where the house is decluttered and housework is just maintenance. I know part of the answer is too. Wish me luck with that.

Beauty – Because of my very sensitive skin, it’s really hard to find a brand or brands to stick with long term. Changes in the weather affect my skin too and I find that products that work in the summer just don’t when it gets cold and dry and vice versa. So, I tried Dime Beauty. I bought their Works Travel Set and it was pretty darn good. BUT I still wanted to really pare down to just one brand for everything (skincare and makeup) so I’m currently testing out (again) Mary Kay. They came out with a very basic line last year that’s supposed to be good for sensitive skin and so I’m trying that out. And so far so good. Their mineral sunscreen is also really good as well as their foundations. So, I’m going to keep on keeping on with this for awhile and see where it leads. At least I know if it doesn’t work I can go back to Dime Beauty or even Tower 28 which is a brand made specifically for sensitive skin. I’m also courting the idea of an actual dermatologist. If you don’t change something nothing will change.

Reading – For spiritual reading I’m back in the Gospels after reading Isaiah for the last two months and reading various things on the side. I had an Advent devotional but that wound up on Epiphany so I need to find a new spiritual reading book. I started on JPII’s “On the Dignity and Vocation of Women” and while it is deep I think I can manage it. I need to line up some other books that continues on this theme and see where it leads. In other reading I just didn’t read a whole lot in 2024. Well I did but I didn’t. I read 25 books which is about a book every two weeks. The last book I read was “What Does It Feel Like” by Sophia Kinsella which is about the author’s battle with a brain tumor. I cried a lot during that one and I’m praying that she will recover even though most people do not. :( I hate to think of another brilliant voice in our world snuffed out by stupid shit like cancer or tumors.

Wardrobe – This was an absolute bright spot this last year. I had been wearing one pair of shoes for a while and needed to find more (obviously)A. My stop gap fix was a $10 pair from Aldi that really didn’t fit well. Then one day in September I decided to actually go out to look for shoes. And I found two pairs that first day – a pair of booties and some flats. I went to another shoe store a few days later and found another pair to fill in the comfy shoe gap. I just couldn’t believe it! Later I got a pair of walking shoes from Stitch Fix. I still need some better slippers and still thinking of investing in Birkenstock sandals for the summer, but at least I have 4 pairs to choose from now instead of one. Feels like winning the lottery.

Speaking of Stitch Fix I decided to go back. My first two fixes were fantastic and I kept ALL the items in them. My last fix was good and I’m still regretting not buying the coat (which I really needed and wasn’t that small) but I came away with two more long sleeve shirts for the cold weather. My next fix is about to be fixed and now you can add up to 8 items instead of just 5 so I’m testing that out too. I’ve had the same stylist for the last 3 fixes and hope she sticks around for the long haul because I really like her and she’s doing an amazing job for me.

House Problems – Oh yeah – can’t have a year without those right? The big issue is we need to have at least one pipe replaced in our front yard because the tree that had been there decided to leave it’s roots in it. We had two plumbing back ups last year so it has got to get done. It’s not going to be cheap but it has to get done. We really need a new washer as well. We fixed ours early last year and the new part promptly broke in a few months so we’ve been partly going to the laundromat and partly doing really small loads at home. I need to get out this week and find a new one. Did I mention we’ve only had our current one 4 and a half years?? Nothing is made to last anymore. Oh, almost forgot. A critter died in our garage in late summer which led to it being cleaned out (we rented a dumpster) for the most part. It’s not done but it’s about 85% cleared and you can walk through it now. We never did find the critter.

Weather Recap – Winter cold and ice, tornado outbreak in May (with one going through our neck of the woods), followed by drought which was followed by a fall deluge. Now we are back to winter cold and snow followed by a warm up followed by another arctic outbreak. UGH. The Midwest weather woes are not for the faint of heart.

Well I think that’s a good wrap up of 2024. Hoping for actual changes in 2025 but it’s going to take a lot of work on my part. Please pray I have the strength to get things done, to get out of my comfort zone, and that I find the right people (meaning they actually show up and get things done) for the things that need fixing. Thanks. Happy New Year everyone!

About Me

Mom avatar

Hi - welcome to Oh Crap! and if you come back enough times you'll soon find out why I named my blog that.

I am an unperfect mom to 8 great kids: 5 boys and 3 girls (and I had them in that order too).

I have been married for either 40 really long or really short years depending on how my day is going.

Even though I have homeschooled my children for the last 31 years, I am certainly no supermom - unless you count the days I have to rescue my daughters from a moth in their room.

I love coffee, chocolate, and music from the 80's. I enjoy reading books, chick flicks, and thirtysomething.

So, that's me in a nutshell (and I'm probably more of a nut than you know). Thank you for visiting me on my blog!
