April Update
April 30, 2015
Sooo, I haven’t updated anything in awhile or written anything for that matter, and since it’s the end of a month and the beginning of a new one, I thought I’d jump in again.
What I’ve been doing:
No spend weeks – Yes, it was necessary. Since Christmas we’d been bleeding out money for this and that (nothing we had to have and no menu plans which meant wasting food money too), and I decided on a no spend week. That meant after I did the grocery shopping and got other necessaries (clothing, school items, etc.) I didn’t buy anything outside of milk and bread for the week. Well, it worked! Since then I’ve been keeping to that only it’s almost habit now. :-) So, that means we have money for other things we need like a new oven element. Which brings me to…
Oven update – The oven repair guy never showed up or called ever again so we took matters into our own hands. We ordered a new element through Sears and in one week we had the part, installed it, and we have an oven that can bake properly again. One of the first things I baked was a chocolate cake. Everything is cooked much faster and thoroughly now. I made two quiches for a lunch that came out awesome so I’m absolutely thrilled.
My word for the year – Okay I usually don’t do this kind of blog drivel, but this one word kept popping up within the last few weeks – NOURISH. So, I looked up the meaning: To cause (something) to develop or grow stronger. I like that and it’s exactly what I need to do for myself – get stronger! That’s physically stronger, mentally stronger, and emotionally stronger. It means a lot of work and maybe it’s a lifetime kind of thing. So, I bought a new book called (ha!) Nourished by Becky Johnson and her daughter Rachel Randolph. I’ve already read the first three chapters and so far there is a lot of good stuff in here! Becky Johnson is 50 something so that was one of the reasons I picked it up. I am needing books written by women my age letting me know how to navigate these new waters of menopause, aging, and an empty nest looming ever quicker.
Watching thirtysomething – Again. And all the way through from Season One to Season Four. That I haven’t done. I am currently in Season Two and up to Miles Drentell’s arrival and picking up on things I haven’t before which is always fun. Have I said before how much I love this show? All the time? Well there’s a reason for it.
I cancelled my Amazon Prime Membership – Really, it was fueling my book addiction which makes them an enabler. Not good. I might get back in at some point, but right now I’m happy enough without it. It helps with that no spend thing.
Using Up What I Have – This kind of goes with the no spend business. It started because I had a lot of little skincare samples and I decided I needed to use them before I bought anything new. Also because I can’t decide what to buy anymore since my skin has changed so much. This also works in the kitchen – use what I have on hand to make meals and avoid running out for ingredients for something else altogether. Having a well stocked pantry and freezer helps a lot here too and I’ve been doing that as well.
So, that’s what I’ve been up to. Well, you know the main things that stick out in memory. Maybe I’ll actually get back to doing Music Mondays and those other ideas I had back in March. It would be a start. Again. :-)
