  • Don’t Worry – Be Happy

    June 24, 2011

Ah it’s finally Friday!! I’ve had an emotional week so today I thought I’d ruminate on that song that defined the 1980’s but is also not a bad adage for one’s life.

Here is a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
    Don’t worry be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
    Don’t worry, be happy……

I am a worrier by nature and I agree here, when you worry you are just making things worse.  I read in this book that “worrying is just something you do while waiting for the real thing to happen”.  Hmmm – yes, I think that’s an accurate description of worry for me.

Ain’t got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
    Don’t worry, be happy
The land lord say your rent is late
    He may have to litigate
    Don’t worry, be happy
Lood at me I am happy

Ah yes, financial worries, well ours are coming to a close finally.  This month we make the last payment to the last creditor after doing the infamous debt snowball and I am SO glad!!  Sure we may not have debtor’s prisons anymore, but it FEELS like it when you’re being called constantly and they want more money than you can give them and on and on.  The smartest thing I did was A) stop making payments at all and use that money to build up my pantry and buy a few clothing items my kids really needed.    The second smartest thing I did – stop taking any calls from these jokers.  Yep, that’s right I only called them when I needed to and otherwise just didn’t pick the phone up for a year and a half.  I also gave it all to Jesus and he backed me up and here we are almost paid off!! WHOO!!  Today I was out with Maggie and decided to stop by Starbucks to get us both a Frappucinno because WE CAN!   I think we can also assume he is talking about contentment – being happy with what you have in spite of what you don’t.  I have to say I have been cultivating an attitude of gratitude and it really does help.  Your life won’t be free of problems, but you will be happier with what you have than worrying about the stuff you don’t.

Here I give you my phone number
    When you worry call me
    I make you happy
    Don’t worry, be happy

Having friends does help with happiness.  While I have no “IRL” friends, I do have pen pal friends and they are true and real friends indeed!  It has taken me to go out of my comfort zone to stay involved and work on these relationships, but it has been so very worth it.

Ain’t got not girl to make you smile
    But don’t worry be happy
    Cause when you worry
    Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry, be happy (now)…..

Speaking of style, we are getting a free preview month of OWN network and what is on every morning at 8am cst?? What Not To Wear!! YES!! So, I’ve been enjoying some episodes from 2005 and 2006 including the infamous “Peanut” episode – that one makes me laugh my butt off!!  Soon we won’t get the free preview and I won’t get to see Stacy and Clinton anymore, but I’m trying to decide if I want to up our Dish package so we can get TLC and WNTW again.  Of course it will come with ESPN and I’m already a tech and sports widow and just not sure this is the way to go. Oh, and I do think my style has improved a little since watching the show :-).

There is this little song I wrote
I hope you learn it note for note
    (Like good little children)
    Don’t worry, be happy
    (Listen to what I say)
In your life expect some trouble
    But when you worry
    You make it double
    Don’t worry, be happy……
Don’t worry don’t do it, be happy
Put a smile on your face
Don’t bring everybody down like this
Don’t worry, it will soon past
    Whatever it is
    Don’t worry, be happy

Oh yeah EXPECT trouble – someone forgot to give me that memo apparently.  In the last 6 years we have: replaced two refrigerators, replaced a washer and dryer, replaced one stove, replaced  two water heaters, replaced two air conditioners, had  numerous plumbing episodes, replaced a stolen cd player from car,  and had our van repaired several times.   Some of us just have more trouble than others.  It’s no wonder I worry!  However, I try to put my trust in God where it belongs, even if it’s hard to do some days.   Maybe I should take these four little words to heart and sing the song when things go wrong.  Who knows, maybe I’ll just laugh it off and be able to move forward easier.  Worrying sure doesn’t bring results.

So, that’s my expounding on the song and my week and my life :-).   Matt is coming home for the weekend and we’re going to watch Tron Classic and Tron Legacy this weekend so that should be fun.   Here’s to not worrying and being happy just in the present moment for worrying about tomorrow does no good.

Already corrupting my sisters with your evil coffee ways? I will not stand for this.

I myself kind of live by the "don't worry, be happy" motto. Life's short enough as it is and if you spend your whole time worrying, you'll miss all the good stuff.

That's right I am! Except I'm not getting them Fraps with coffee in them - I know better. However, Katie cried her eyes out because she hasn't got one yet. Le sigh. I agree - I've already missed out on some things due to worry and am trying to fix that. Except for tornadoes - still gotta worry when one of those is in the neighborhood :-).

About Me

Mom avatar

Hi - welcome to Oh Crap! and if you come back enough times you'll soon find out why I named my blog that.

I am an unperfect mom to 8 great kids: 5 boys and 3 girls (and I had them in that order too).

I have been married for either 40 really long or really short years depending on how my day is going.

Even though I have homeschooled my children for the last 31 years, I am certainly no supermom - unless you count the days I have to rescue my daughters from a moth in their room.

I love coffee, chocolate, and music from the 80's. I enjoy reading books, chick flicks, and thirtysomething.

So, that's me in a nutshell (and I'm probably more of a nut than you know). Thank you for visiting me on my blog!
