  • When Past and Present Meet

    March 31, 2011

I was relating this story to my brother Dave last night and realized it is just the kind of story to share on a blog.  So, it’s kind of a belated Music Monday of sorts.

Back in 2006 Matt started working at Wal-Mart and meeting all kinds of new people.  One of the persons he met was Jack, a guy who I had gone to school with.  I had seen Jack from time to time late at night when picking Matt up from work (and probably before that too), and when he found out that Matt was my son, he asked him a question:

“Does your mom still like Barry Manilow?”

UGH!!  I can’t believe he remembered that!!! Of course Matt was laughing his butt off about it too.  Swell, just swell.  Don’t ever think people won’t remember really embarrasing stuff from your teens when you are all grown up.

On a secondary note, I don’t care so much for Mr. Manilow anymore, but his song “Mandy” will forever remain one of my very favorite songs of all time.

  • First Frog of Spring!

    March 22, 2011

Last Friday, the kids were playing outside when suddenly,   they came running in all excited to tell me that they had found a frog.  So, I went out to see this little guy.  He was in the weater in a sandbox and looked like he was trying to climb out.  So we watched as little by little he made his way up the side, on to the edge, down on the cement, and finally crawled under some leaves and grass to rest.  It always amazes me to see the details on even the smallest of creatures.  So, of course you know I ran out with my camera to capture this first frog of spring.  May he and his buddies return many times over this season to rest and play in our yard.  Happy spring!!

  • Music Monday

    March 21, 2011

I was at Wal-Mart last weekend (geez, like I’m never NOT at that store!), and was browsing the cd’s when I found this little treasure:  Soft Rock 70’s.  So, I looked at the songs on it and there were alot of them that I love and haven’t heard in ages! And a few I can’t stand :-).  At $9.99 I figured I couldn’t lose, so I bought it.  Besides, I’m starting to pull my 70’s songs together now that my 80’s collection is mostly done.  As you remember, I’m still trying to replace all those singles that I tossed out on the curb that day.

Here are the songs on it – see how many you remember:

    1. Let Your Love Flow (meh)

    2. I’d Really Love To See You Tonight

    3. Just Remember I Love You (love, love, love)

    4. Dance With Me

    5. Baby Come Back

    6. Don’t Give Up On Us (blech)

    7. When I Need You (blech)

    8. Just When I Needed You Most (blech)

    9. I’d Love You To Want Me

    10. I Go Crazy (love, love, love!)

    11. Sad Eyes (Robert John is the artist and he also sang “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” – no kidding) (oh, and blech)

    12. Summer Breeze

    13. Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

    14. Laughter In the Rain

    15. Can We Still Be Friends (meh – don’t really know this one)

    16. Kiss You All Over (meh)

    17. If You Leave Me Now

So now I’ve started my 70’s collection and I guess I’ll have to go to Napster and start adding music to my collection again.  Which reminds me, I did get “Little Willy” by Sweet and “Spirit In the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum from Napster recently – great tunes.  I’ve got a running list of songs to work with as well, but the choosing will be difficult.

  • Cha-cha-cha-changes!

    March 17, 2011

So, this has been of week of changes for us.

First off I want to say that the changes in Japan are devastating and leave me so sad – my prayers are with them all!

Secondly, we had that nasty thing called Daylight Savings Time return – blech.  I wish they would just leave it alone and go back to standard time year round.  It took me four days to feel normal again!!  Four days that zipped by in a blur.  Four days of interrupted sleep.  Last night was my first night of good sleep, getting up on time this morning, and starting everything I needed to do on time today.  I feel like I had a normal day again!

Lastly, Jeff and I took this time during his spring break to go to the hair salon and get our hair cut.  No, not a trim – a CUT – as in lots of hair coming off.  Both of us.  Jeff had grown tired of his long hair and wanted to get back to his old shorty short style.  I had also grown tired of my hair, and needed a style consistent with  my age and personality.  I should have taken a lot of pictures at the salon (the amount of hair that fell was incredible),  but at least I did take before and after pictures so see what you think!

First off - I'm willingly getting a picture taken of myself. That is a huge thing for me as my family (kids and siblings) will tell you.

And here's Jeff with his mop - just about as long as mine.

Now, drum roll please,  time for the transformation photos!!

Yep, that's me!! It is a great style and I feel it reflects my personality so much more!

Here's a side view - I just love my new do!! BTW, yes that is my real hair color.

And here's Jeff!! The difference is incredible!!

Our hairstylist did a fantastic job and we will be going back to her so I hope she stays where she is (or if she moves, lets us know where).  I feel like I finally have a stylist again after many long years of trying to find one who listens to me and cares about my hair.

So, let me know what you think – dramatic, no?!

  • Weekend Gallery – Meow Is The Word

    March 13, 2011

I recently found a paper of Maggie’s from her bad day of school.  The story is, she was in a mood one day and refused to do her work.  I was trying to get her to do her spelling page – putting contractions and the words they stand for – and instead she did this:

Yes, that’s right – her stuffed cat Sally apparently took over and wrote “meow”  in every spot.  I had to laugh – it was so cute and clever!  For what it’s worth,  I let her have the day off school and the next day she was just fine.

  • TGIF Wrap Up

    March 11, 2011

All righty,  I’ll tell ya now – I’m pooped!!  It has been a busy week and, quite frankly, an exhausting 4 months.  So, I’m taking a school break today to catch up on laundry, housework, and a little paperwork.  In the meantime I’ll tell you what we’ve been up to.  Oh, and last Friday I took a day off and caught up on loads of paperwork  – that felt SO good!

    1. Matt,  my oldest, started working at a new place of employment on Monday.  So far it seems to be going quite well.  Also, he will be moving out on his own around May or June.  Don’t ask me how I feel about that yet – it’s all jumbled.

    2. Jeff and Chris will have their  spring break next week from college.  Chris is also taking vacation from his job so they’ll be chillin’ for about 10 days.  I’m making a menu plan with that in mind – lots of their favorites.

    3.  I am in book buying mode since Maggie and Joe finish up Sonlight’s Core 1 this month and will be going into Core 3+4 (American History) in May.  We haven’t been able to buy this many books in a LONG time and I’m having a blast!!   Core 4 Science and a Flashmaster (for math fact practice) arrived yesterday – lots of great stuff!!

    4. Katie and Becky are doing well in school and Becky is really starting to move with her reading.  Each day is easier for her and brings more success. They were not happy about their new handwriting books however.

    5.  Some of us are still bowling on Friday nights, but the girls and I have been staying home of late to have a girlie night in.   They get tired after one game so it’s less frustrating to just stay home.  I like bowling, but I like having sanity more.

    6.  Lent started on Wednesday and I blew it right away.  It was a long day and I was low on fuel and ate a piece of caramel chocolate while watching What Not to Wear.  Oops.  Oh well, I’m unperfect remember?

    7.  I’m starting to bring out my springtime music – namely REO Speedwagon – and it is SO good to hear it again.  Yes, I am a seasonal music listener – it just suits my soul better this way.  I also bought five new songs from Napster and will talk about all this Monday for Music Monday.  Hopefully I’ll remember :-).

    8. I realized while talking to my brother, Dan, that I have lost 15 pounds since last August!! Wow – how did that happen?? I was thinking maybe 5 to 8 lbs but I did the math (several times) and indeed I am 15 pounds lighter.  Talk about motivation! My new goal is to lose 9lbs by Easter.  Hopefully giving up coffee and chocolate will help.

Okay, I think that sums up my week and then some.  See you back on Sunday for Weekend Gallery and to talk music on Monday.  Happy Friday everyone!!

  • Lent Starts on Wednesday

    March 6, 2011

Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday – later than usual but now it’s creeping up fast it seems.  That also means I have had more time than usual to think about what I will do this year and I have come up with some ideas:

    1. Give up coffee – I think this could be easier this year seeing as how I’m not needing it as much these days and I’m all out of my Keurig coffee at the moment.

    2. Keep a tight rein on my tongue – This will be really hard because I have a lot of things in this area to work on, but since sacrifice should be difficult, it’s worth a shot.

    3. Give up chocolate – Actually I don’t eat as much of this as I used to so it could be a go.

    4. Cut down on internet time – Since it is book buying season, I have been spending more time than usual online.  Wouldn’t hurt to cut back especially since I’ll be finished soon.

So, those are the four things I’ve come up with and we’ll see what I can do.  Maybe the coffee and keeping my talking in line because I’m in most need of the sacrifice of giving up the coffee and learning to keep my mouth shut sometimes.  I’ll keep you posted.

  • A Funny Oh Crap! Moment

    March 4, 2011

Yesterday I was making pancakes for lunch, everything was going well, and I was taking the first pancake off the griddle.  I turned to put a pancake  on the plate and that pancake zipped right past the plate, off the spatula, and onto the floor.  I had to laugh!!

  • Making Progress

    March 3, 2011

Well, I stepped on the scale this morning and find that somehow I’ve lost another 1/2 pound!!  Now, you might be thinking that’s not a lot, but I will beg to differ.  I’m going in the right direction of losing weight, so any amount is to be celebrated and it will help propel me forward to make the changes I need to make.  SO, I feel good about that!

On the other hand, somewhere along the line I fell off the take care of myself wagon and lost my housecleaning groove as well.  Last November and December were incredibly busy and emotionally draining for me, and I think I basically used February with it’s cold and snow to huddle up against all that.   Now that spring is coming around, it is time to get out of my funk, acknowledge that it was a difficult time, but now it’s time to move forward.   There is a part of me that doesn’t want to let go, and I’ll let her catch up when she is ready.

I bought two books that are going to help me with my Improve Me project – one is called Simply in Season and the other The Happiness Project.  Simply in Season is about seasonal eating in regard to fruits and vegetables and it makes so much sense to buy what’s in season when it’s in season.  The food is tastier and cheaper as well.  It has information about how to pick, cook, and preserve your food and then has loads of recipes as well.  All in all I think it’s a good book to get me started eating more fruits and vegetables.  I hope the family will like it too.

The other book is The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and it’s a memoir of sorts of a project the author did one year to increase her happiness.   I don’t even know if I know what real happiness is.  I have feelings of happiness from time to time, but it never lasts so I don’t think that’s what it is.  The book goes through the changes she made in her life and how it affected her and her family.  I have already looked through the book via the one I got from the library, and it has a lot in it that has made me stop and think about my own life and how I can find happiness within myself instead of from outside sources only.  I am reading it with a friend and I think together we can find some solutions for ourselves.

So, that’s my progress for the last month and a little goal setting for March.  Here’s to making progress and really, isn’t life just a work in progress anyway – always moving forward?

About Me

Mom avatar

Hi - welcome to Oh Crap! and if you come back enough times you'll soon find out why I named my blog that.

I am an unperfect mom to 8 great kids: 5 boys and 3 girls (and I had them in that order too).

I have been married for either 40 really long or really short years depending on how my day is going.

Even though I have homeschooled my children for the last 31 years, I am certainly no supermom - unless you count the days I have to rescue my daughters from a moth in their room.

I love coffee, chocolate, and music from the 80's. I enjoy reading books, chick flicks, and thirtysomething.

So, that's me in a nutshell (and I'm probably more of a nut than you know). Thank you for visiting me on my blog!
