thirtysomething – Pilot
October 2, 2010
I just finished watching the pilot (on Wed – it is now Saturday) and I have to say I do not get tired of watching this show. Right off the bat I want to say that I am not Hope, nor will I ever be. I wanted to be her – to be the mom that somehow knew by osmosis how to take care of her child. Maybe it was because she was older and had more maturity in general. I dunno. My favorite line: “Iwas so looking forward to this. Being a grown-up for an hour”. Hope was out with the baby and meeting up with Ellyn, but the baby was fussy and Hope ended up leaving the restaurant. Oh, how I can relate to that! Dealing with dirty diapers, feedings, and the like all day and needing to talk with someone who didn’t just gurgle. I was the only one in my circle of friends to have a child when Matt was born, and I felt they just did not get it. Like Hope thinks Ellyn doesn’t get it. A child changes your whole life and this episode I felt dealt with that quite well on all sides.
Back then I thought that Michael was very good looking, but that was about it – too good looking to be my type. I liked Gary because he was cute and a bit dangerous – someone I would definitely had been attracted to back in the day. I never thought about Elliot though (except how funny he was – I like that) and now I like him and his character the best really. I understand that character and his marriage to Nancy all too well. But that’s for another episode.
As far as the women go, Hope was too perfect for me to relate to back then and now I realize that she embodied who I wanted to be. I can relate to Ellyn a little and Melissa a little (I’ve had a lot of therapy too – heh), but Nancy is ME. I am her on so many levels and now that I am older, now that I have been married a long time, I can understand a lot of that character.
It’s weird how time how time has changed my perceptions of the show, but also how it brings back so many of the feelings and perceptions I had back then. Still – I think it is a timeless show (okay, except for the fashions and tech gadgets) because it deals with issues we ALL deal with through our lives. That’s why I like it so much.
