thirtysomething – episodes 2 and 3
October 2, 2010
I started my Friday night thirtysomething ritual last night and here’s my takes on episodes 2 and 3:
Episode 2 – The Parents Are Coming – I just couldn’t figure out why Hope was so eager to condemn her mother. I think that she had the expectation of her mother judging her now because that’s how it had been when she was growing up. What Hope can’t see is that her mother is trying to change. Her mother is trying to enjoy her daughter and grandchild because time has gone by so quickly and now is the time to put away the old arguments of the past and move on. Another thing Hope doesn’t understand is how her parents see her and how she has acted with them, but her father reminds her and gives her something to think about.
One of my favorite parts of this episode is when Hope’s father defends Hope’s mother – his wife. He will not allow his daughter to speak badly about her mother and chastises her for it. That to me is a knight in shining armor – he is defending the woman he loves.
Episode 3 – Housewarming – I have to say I always loved Hope and Michael’s house and I really did not remember how they were constantly working on it. Oh, and I always thought you invited friends and family to housewarmings and not people you wanted to schmooze with – isn’t that called a business dinner? We’ve never had a housewarming so I wouldn’t know anyway :-). I do have an old house like that though.
Hope’s little flirtations with the young contractor brought to mind the first time I was called “maam” – I was not quite 30 and it made me feel so old! The age difference of 10 years sometimes can be a great chasm as they both found out. I also feel this is a little bit of foreshadowing of later episodes with Lee and Melissa.
I almost forgot about Janine – Michael and Elliot’s hapless secretary! Those scenes with her were always laugh out loud funny.
And the ending – how could I forget that ending! With all of them gathering in Hope and Michael’s living room and talking and laughing. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I wish my life was filled with friends like that!
Well, there you go, those are the things that were memorable to me about these episodes. Stay tuned!
